Relevant standards

  • 1.1 - The risks associated with providing pharmacy services are identified and managed

Why this is notable practice

The pharmacy is communicating with the community about the importance of not visiting the pharmacy but remaining at home. And it is reassuring people that they will receive their medicines safely.

How the pharmacy did this

The superintendent pharmacist (SI) posted a short video on social media from the pharmacy. The message told people to stay safely at home. The SI used the message to inform people to phone the pharmacy and it would deliver their medicines to them. The message was delivered as a personal plea. And explained by staying at home people would save lives. In the message the SI thanked the community for its support over many years, how he appreciated people coming and using the pharmacies. He reflected on how people had shared their life events with him and the team. But expressed that now he needed them not to come to the pharmacy but stay at home to limit the spread of COVID-19. He also used this opportunity to remind people to use NHS 111 if they were worried about symptoms rather than coming to the pharmacy.

What difference this made to patients

People are well informed about how they will get their medicines. And the personal approach taken to communicating the message means more people are likely to take heed and stay at home. People are also informed about what to do should they be worried they experience symptoms of COVID-10 infection.
