British Chemist and All Chemists (9011271) - Improvement action plan

Standard not met Reason Action being taken by the Pharmacy By when Notification By Pharmacy Improvements Made
1.1

The pharmacy does not adequately identify the risks involved in selling medicines online. It doesn’t keep its written instructions sufficiently up to date so there is a risk the pharmacy team may carry out tasks they are no longer allowed to. And it may not be clear who is responsible and accountable for the supply of medicines. People's private information may not be protected when it is shared to obtain medicines for diabetes which also cause weight loss. The pharmacy does not adequately consider the risk of people with diabetes being unable to obtain their medicines as a result of it not following, and actively circumventing, the patient safety alert designed to protect stocks of those medicines for the treatment of people with diabetes.

1. Pharmacy will not open as a pharmacy until a suitable responsible pharmacist is identified even if this takes 9 months

2 Some or all the SOPs may require updating to reflect current situation in the pharmacy

3. We will not supply any medications to another pharmacy which has sent people’s prescriptions to circumvent the quota. We will only fulfil private prescriptions where the patients have come to us directly.

4. We will always look out for alerts to ensure we do not dispense something that is for one group of people to another group of people who are more vulnerable.

5 We have just created an additional folder named ‘GPhC Alerts’ and anything that is essential such as the Ozempic issue will be put into the folder once it has been acknowledged. Furthermore, we already have a folder for MHRA alerts which we will also check regularly

3.1

The website is misleading in places because some information is incorrect. The pharmacy doesn't keep its website sufficiently up to date so there is a risk people looking online won't know who is responsible for what the pharmacy does. And it may not be clear who is responsible and accountable for the supply of medicines.

I will ensure that the website is always updated. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. The Superintendent has been updated as well as the Responsible Pharmacist has also been updated. I have updated everything and made things clearer.

4.3

The pharmacy has inadequate stock management procedures in place, resulting in unusually high stock levels of high-risk medicines which it has not been able to satisfactorily explain.

1. Currently stock is not being ordered at all but for the future we will ensure we only have enough for 2 weeks forward. See attached SOP that explicitly mentions not to order excess stock of high-risk lines
