Tait's Pharmacy (1109439) - Improvement action plan

Standard not met Reason Action being taken by the Pharmacy By when Notification By Pharmacy Improvements Made
1.1

The pharmacy doesn’t adequately manage all the risks with its services. This includes the pharmacist working in an untidy and cluttered dispensary. And there is an increased risk of mistakes by the way the pharmacy stores and manages its medicines. The pharmacy doesn’t have complete and up-to-date written procedures that reflect the pharmacy’s current practice. And the pharmacist rarely uses the procedures.

-carry out a risk assessment of services provided.
-Create, update and complete SOPs to reflect current practise.
-Dispensary is small and as space is limited, sometimes when there are other services being provided along with dispensing, the area becomes cluttered. A conscious effort will be made to keep it as clean and tidy as possible.

4.3

The pharmacy does not have an adequately robust process for managing the storage of its medicines and for checking expiry dates. And there is evidence of out-of-date medicines on the shelves. The pharmacy does not always keep its medicines in the original packs. So, there is a risk the pharmacy may supply medicines that are not fit for purpose.

Medicines are stored appropriately, in alphabetical order. The previous procedure for checking expiries had some flaws so a new procedure has been implemented and an SOP will be created to reflect this. Expiry dates are checked at the point of dispensing every product. All medicines will be kept in original containers. If for any reason, medication is popped from a blister and subsequently not used, it will be stored in an appropriate container and marked with the name, strength, form, batch number, expiry date etc. if the storage conditions allow this.
