Pharmacy context

The pharmacy is located in an integrated health and social care centre in the industrial town of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. The centre also house three GP surgeries, community dental services, nursing and social care teams. The pharmacy is open 08:00-20:00 365 days of the year.
The pharmacy has a unique NHS pharmacy contract in place known as a ‘Local Pharmacy Services’ (LPS) contract. This means that in addition to providing essential NHS services the pharmacy is paid to provide meaningful interventions with patients. Half of these interventions (approximately 150 per month) are delivered through the ‘not-dispensed’ scheme where the pharmacists work to identify patients who may have unnecessary, unwanted or clinically inappropriate prescriptions. Other interventions under the contract include targeting specific groups of patients to provide counselling on the appropriate use of their medicines, check medication regimens and provide information about medicines and chronic health conditions.
Other services the pharmacy provided included travel health vaccinations (including yellow fever), supply of medicines under North Lincolnshire minor ailments scheme and flu vaccinations (both private and NHS).
The pharmacy dispenses approximately 13,000 NHS items per month. This includes the provision of supervised methadone and buprenorphine to 90 patients (approximately 70 of these are on methadone) and provision of medicines in monitored dosage system (MDS) trays to 52 community based patients.
