Pharmacy-only medicines, including medicines liable to misuse, are available for sale in the retail area and sold by staff who are not healthcare trained. The pharmacy is unable demonstrate that it manages the risks associated with this.

Sale of P meds in the retail area

• Remove high risk P meds from areas that are not visible from the pharmacy area and placed behind the pharmacy counter immediately.

• P meds which are placed in Perspex boxes will be moved to locations which are in the direct line of sight of the Pharmacist and dispensary team.


Training of colleagues

• Ensure all colleagues, including new-joins are enrolled on the MCA course.

• Provide appropriate training time and support for the colleagues who are on the training course.

• Ensure all colleagues have read and understand the sale of medicine protocol and SOP.

• Organise team meetings and discuss in the Patient Safety Meeting the sale of Pharmacy Medicines with all colleagues.


Risk assessment

• Define the principles in displaying P meds in GSL area. Agree the location of the P meds in GSL areas. Ensure high risk medicine are not be displayed in GSL area.
