Gordon Davie Chemist (1032620) - Improvement action plan

Standard not met Reason Action being taken by the Pharmacy By when Notification By Pharmacy Improvements Made
4.3

The pharmacy cannot demonstrate that all its medicines requiring cold storage are kept at the appropriate temperatures. It has two fridges used for storing medicines but can only show it is recording the temperatures for one of them. During the inspection, the fridge which had no records was showing a maximum temperature outside of the appropriate range. Although the current temperature was within the appropriate range. Not keeping temperature records means that the pharmacy is less able to demonstrate that the medicines are still safe to use.

Both fridges have new calibrated thermometers installed and the temperatures of both fridges are monitored and recorded daily by all members of the dispensary. One person has not been designated as I feel that all staff should know and recognised the importance of these recordings are to maintain medicines in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirement. Also to record any anomalies or reasons for temperatures being out of the 2-8 degrees Celsius. For example, if the fridge door is open longer than normal to be cleaned and a reason explain how the medicines were stored during the process. The temperatures are recorded on a temperature template.

The pharmacy does not always protect people’s personal information properly. To access the consultation room, people must pass a shelf containing bagged ready prescriptions awaiting collection. So, there is a risk that people’s information is not sufficiently protected.

The shelves by the consultation room are now stored in canvas boxes that hide all details of patient so that any patient being seen in the consultation room cannot see any details of other patients’ prescriptions ready for collection.
