Pharmacy context

A local community based pharmacy belonging to the South Hampshire pharmacy chain; H.J. Everett. There are 11 pharmacies owned by the company. The pharmacy is located in the semi- rural town of Hedge End on the outskirts of Southampton.

The majority of the pharmacy’s customers live locally and consist of predominantly elderly local residents although there is a growing population of young families in the area. It is expected that the population will expand further with the completion of three new housing developments, expected to provide in excess of 1000 new homes.
NHS dispensing is the main activity with approximately 7,000 prescriptions dispensed each month. Approximately 80% of prescriptions are received electronically and the remainder are either collected from local surgeries on behalf of customers or brought in by walk-in customers. The pharmacy also provides a repeat prescription collection and delivery service. Prescriptions are almost entirely obtained from the local village surgery with a small number received form two other surgeries in the general locality.
Other services include Medicines Use Reviews (MURs) where approximately 5 patients are seen each month for an MUR. Emergency Hormonal Contraception (EHC) is provided under a NHS Patient Group Direction (PGD) with approximately 10 supplies made per month and there is a free condom service and a chlamydia screening service. The pharmacy provides medicines in monitored dosage system trays (MDS) for approximately 60 to 65 patients in the community. Drug misuse services are provided to 4 clients one of which has a daily supervised dose of Buprenorphine. A winter flu vaccination service is available between October and April and last season 30 patients were vaccinated. The New Medicines Service (NMS) is available but there is little uptake.

The pharmacy is commissioned to provide urgent medication to patients through its participation in the Pharmacy Urgent repeat Medication (PURM) scheme. The scheme is designed to help patients who contact NHS 111 to seek advice after running out of their medication. There has been a positive response to the service, particularly over the recent bank holiday season. Several supplies have been made since the service began with three emergency supplies made on the last bank holiday alone.

Health checks are available at the pharmacy. The checks involve the measurement of blood pressure, BMI and cholesterol and the provision of advice regarding general lifestyle, diet and exercise.

The pharmacy is open from 8.30am to 5.30pm from Monday to Friday a 1-2pm pharmacist on lunch. 9am to 1.00pm on Saturdays.
