Pharmacy context
The pharmacy is situated in the town centre of Thornaby within a shopping centre. There is a nearby health centre with two surgeries with about twelve doctors each.
Approximately 8000 items are dispensed per month, with about seven patients receiving medication in monitored dosage systems (MDS) trays. Few private prescriptions are dispensed monthly as this area had high unemployment and the majority of prescriptions are exempt for this reason or age. A collection service is offered from the health centre. About 80% of prescriptions are received electronically. Several prescriptions were for CDs and could not be received electronically.
The range of services includes Medicines Use Reviews (MURs), New Medicines Service (NMS), emergency hormonal contraception (EHC), smoking cessation, malaria advice, sildenafil, flu vaccinations (seasonal). Health checks including blood pressure monitoring and cholesterol are undertaken.
A substance misuse service is provided to around six methadone clients, two are supplied weekly and the others daily supervised. There are also two clients receiving buprenorphine.
The pharmacy is open 8.00am to 8.00pm Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 8.00am to 9.00pm Thursday and Friday, 8.00am to 8.00pm on Saturday and 10.00am to 4.00pm on Sunday.
