Ironbridge Pharmacy (1036078) - Improvement action plan

Standard not met Reason Action being taken by the Pharmacy By when Notification By Pharmacy Improvements Made
4.3

The pharmacy does not carry out enough checks to make sure medicines are stored appropriately and are suitable for supply.

We currently put a 'CD' sticker on the bags which either contain a CD with safe custody requirements or if there are other items, then on the non-CD prescription bag to remind there is a CD in the cabinet. We now propose to put a sticker on bags which contain controlled drugs which are not exempt from safe custody requirements such as Diazepam and Pregabalin. This will ensure are not handed out after 28 days as the prescription would have expired.

We have updated our ordering system so that not all drugs are automatically ordered. This will stop shelves from being clogged up and increase segregation between the drugs, which in turn will prevent them from being mixed up and accidentally picked and even handed to the patient.

We currently perform date checks every three months, and put stickers on medicines which are going to expire within the next six months. During the other two months, a dispenser checks if anything has expired and removes them from the shelf ready to be safely disposed. We will make sure a more thorough check is performed.

We have ordered a cytotoxic waste bin, which will enable us to dispose of drugs such as methotrexate and prevent any contamination.

We are purchasing a new fridge and also have ordered a new thermometer.
