Most medicines are stored appropriately in their original containers. But when assembling compliance packs (MDS trays) the pharmacy sometimes removes medicines from their original blister packaging and stores them loosely. This means the pharmacy cannot be sure that these medicines are being stored in the right conditions to preserve their efficacy. And increases the risk of a mistake being made.

The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for assembling multi-compartment compliance packs will be immediately updated and reviewed by all dispensing staff. Medicines will remain securely in their original blister packaging until the day of tray assembly. The practice of de-blistering and storing medicines loosely in advance will strictly cease to guarantee proper storage conditions and minimise the risk of dispensing errors.
